Philippines pushes for human rights body in Southeast Asia
MANILA, Philippines: The Philippines wants a landmark charter being drafted by Southeast Asian countries to allow the creation of a human rights body to deal with violations in the region, Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo said Thursday.
Diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are locked in debate over the proposal, he said.
"It's still a work in progress," Romulo told a news conference.
Enshrining human rights protection in the charter has been a touchy issue because some ASEAN countries have spotty rights records, such as military-ruled Myanmar.
If you've been there, I know you are laughing right now.
