Hello Kitty Patrol

Thai police force goes pink

In an effort to shape up Bangkok's notoriously lax police force, the crime suppression division has resorted to a unique form of discipline -forcing errant officers to wear pink "Hello Kitty" armbands, media reports said on Monday.

The pink armbands, illustrated with hearts and the Japanese Hello Kitty cute cat cartoon character, will go into effect at Bangkok's Crime Suppression Division this week, said the Bangkok Post newspaper.

Police officers who fail to report for duty, park in prohibited areas, get into fights or are the subject of complaints from the public are all candidates for the badge of shame, said Crime Suppression Division acting chief Pongpat Chayaphan."

This approach is intended to engender a feeling of guilt and discourage them from repeating offences," said Pongpat.
